Only iPhone 17 Pro models to get Apple’s 5x periscope telephoto lens: report | Tech Tips

The iPhone 17 series is not due anytime soon but the rumour mill hasn’t been silent. We have also been hearing about a new iPhone 17 Slim/Air model that could replace the Plus variant. A new leak now claims notable upgrades to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro Max periscope lens. Check out the details.

iPhone 17 Pro models might get 5x optical zoom

• According to a report by the Korean publication TheElec, only the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will get a periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and not the standard versions. 
• The report notes that Apple’s supplier LG Innotex will invest in new facilities for camera modules.

• These facilities could be aimed at producing the camera modules for next year’s iPhones and new models in the “optical solution business and improve competitiveness”
• While Apple might bring camera upgrades to the iPhone 17 series, the folded zoom capabilities could be limited only to the iPhone 17 Pro models like the iPhone 16 series.
• This is no surprise considering the Cupertino giant usually reserves premium features for its Pro models.
• Apple introduced the tetraprism 5x telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which was added to the iPhone 16 Pro this year.
• Besides the iPhone 17 Pro, LG Innotek will also reportedly supply the camera module for the iPhone SE 4, which is expected to debut in March 2025.

iPhone 17 series: what’s to expect?

The iPhone 17 series is expected to include four models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim/Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

• Front camera: Reports claim that the next-gen iPhones may get a 24MP front camera compared to the 12MP lens on the current models.
• Chipset: The Pro and Pro Max models could be powered by the A19 Pro chipset, which will be based on TSMC’s 3nm node. The regular models could get the A18 or A19 chipset.
• Cameras: The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are rumoured to feature a 48MP telephoto/periscope telephoto lens compared to 12MP on the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.
• The iPhone 17 Air/Slim is said to feature a single 48MP camera sensor on the back.
• Display: Reports suggest the iPhone 17 Pro models may feature the same display size as the current models: 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch, respectively. The Dynamic Island on the Pro Max may get a size reduction.
• While the iPhone 17 may retain the 6.1-inch screen, the iPhone 17 Slim/Air is said to use a 6.6-inch display.
