Reliance claims Jio 5G network improves device battery life by 20-40 percent | Tech Tips
At the second quarter (Q2) FY25 earnings call, Reliance Jio announced that it has enhanced its “True 5G” service to offer a better user experience. It is worth noting that Jio is claimed to be the only telecom operator offering 5G through a standalone 5G (SA) network architecture, which delivers gigabit speeds and reduces device power, offering extended battery life by 20 to 40 percent. Here’s more about it.
How Jio 5G network boosts device battery
- At the earnings call, Kiran͏͏ Thomas,͏͏ President͏͏ of͏͏ Reliance͏͏ Jio͏͏ Infocomm͏͏ Limited, highlighted that the Jio network combines a unique set of spectrum assets and technical features, including carrier aggregation and standalone (SA) architecture.
- Unlike traditional 5G networks that rely on existing 4G infrastructure, Jio’s SA 5G is built from the ground up, which offers improved performance and efficiency.
- The company official also notes that Jio’s smart spectrum management helps reduce handset power consumption by efficiently allocating energy-saving spectrum for device communication.
Other notable technological advancements by Jio, including Voice Over New Radio (VoNR), for enhanced performance, are explained below.
- The VoNR feature routes voice calls over its 5G network for improved voice quality and call setup times. It is said that the company is working with major handset makers to make VoNR the default calling method on devices connected to Jio 5G.
- Jio’s 5G network is claimed to provide accurate location data without relying solely on GPS. It uses algorithms like angle of arrival and achieves GPS-like accuracy within 10 meters, which benefits navigation and hyperlocal applications while saving battery life.
- The telecom operator uses advanced time division duplex techniques to manage interference across multiple spectrum bands without affecting network capacity for a smoother user experience in crowded areas.
