Qualcomm eyes mid-premium market with Snapdragon X launch | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • The Snpadragon X joins as the fourth processor with Oryon CPU cores
  • The device targets the mid-premium market under $600
  • The CPU also supports LPDDR5X RAM at 8848 MT/s

Qualcomm entered the laptop market last year, and we tested one of their top offerings, the HP Omnibook X which had the Snapdragon X Elite at its helm. While the performance was decent, and the battery life was stellar, two things held it back: gaming and its launch price. The company finally plans to address them this year, starting with its newest offering: The Snapdragon X (model X1-2E-100).

Qualcomm Snapdragon X

  • To begin with, this processor has 8 Oryon CPU cores clocked at 3.0 GHz, a total cache of 30 MB and a whopping 135 GB/s memory bandwidth.
  • The NPU performance is also on par offering up to 45 TOPS, which is almost 3.7X faster than the Intel Core Ultra 7 (as claimed by the company).
  • The processor runs on a 4nm process, making it battery-friendly.
  • Apart from this, the Qualcomm Adreno GPU promises good performance with numbers reaching up to 1.7 TFLOPS.

In terms of features, the chip has some great Bluetooth features such as Bluetooth 5.4 support, Qualcomm Aqstic audio and Qualcomm aptX Audio support. In terms of cameras, the chip has an Integrated Always-Sensing ISP, with 18-bit depth. It also has MIPI camera support and 4K HDR video capture, making it possible for webcams to look extremely good. The processor also has a wide array of connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7, and 5G.

In addition to laptops, the Snapdragon X will also make its way into mini desktop PCs. This is also another step deeper into the PC market, as these desktops are usually used in small offices, and homes of many consumers.

The global launches will start this month and partners include Acer, ASUS, HP, DELL and Lenovo. Qualcomm claims over 100 designs are coming by 2026, so it seems we might finally have a worthy contender apart from Intel, AMD and Apple.
