Google Pixel 9 Pro manufacturing cost revealed via bill of materials | Tech Tips
Google Pixel 9 Pro is a compact flagship from Google, introduced last month. Despite the smaller form factor, the phone packs in premium hardware. Pixel 9 Pro’s Bill of Materials has surfaced online which shows that the phone will cost $406 to manufacture, which is less than half of the retail price.
Pixel 9 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro have the same retail price tag of $999 (around Rs 84,200) in the US. As for India, the Pixel 9 Pro costs Rs 1,09,999, while the iPhone 16 Pro is priced at Rs 1,19,900 for the base models. Interestingly, the iPhone 16 Pro BOM reveals the phone has a 40 percent higher manufacturing cost compared to Pixel 9 Pro’s components.
Google Pixel 9 Pro manufacturing cost reported
- The Google Pixel 9 Pro’s BoM (bill of materials) is $406 (approx Rs 34,200) as per Nikkei. This is 11 percent less than the Pixel 8 Pro (via 9to5Google).
- This makes sense considering the Pixel 9 Pro comes with a smaller screen and battery compared to the Pixel 8 Pro.
- The Google Tensor G4 chip ticking at the core accounts for $80 (around Rs 6,800), which is slightly more than the previous generation.
- The Samsung-made M14 display unit costs $75 (approx Rs 6,300), while the camera components come at $61 (around Rs 5,100).
- The report notes that Google was able to save on display and camera costs compared to the previous generation.
- The $406 accounts for just components and does not include expenses like shipping, marketing, R&D (research and development), and distribution costs. All of these put together will bring the retail cost of the phone.
In comparison, reports note the Apple iPhone 16 Pro has a significantly higher BoM at $568 (around Rs 47,900), which is 40 percent more than Pixel 9 Pro’s component costs. The component breakdown of the iPhone 16 Pro includes $110 (approx Rs 9,300) for the display unit, $91 (approx Rs 7,700) for the camera system and $135 (around Rs 11,400) for the A18 Pro chipset.
