Google Pixel 10’s Tensor G5 chipset allegedly spotted on Geekbench

Google Pixel 10’s Tensor G5 chipset allegedly spotted on Geekbench | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • A new leak suggests that Google Tensor G5 processor might be a modest upgrade over its predecessor.
  • The listing reveals benchmark scores for the chipset, and the results don’t look too exciting.
  • The new chipset might also feature Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR DXT architecture for its GPU.

Google has been facing an ongoing challenge with the performance of its chipsets. Both the Tensor G3 and Tensor G4 processors came with their own set of issues and didn’t bring major performance upgrades compared to their predecessors. According to recent leaks, the upcoming Google Tensor G5 SoC might be heading down a similar path. Let’s discuss this in more detail below:

Alleged Google Tensor G5 processor on Geekbench

  • A new Google device codenamed “Frankel” has surfaced on the Geekbench listing and this chipset could be the alleged Tensor G5 chipset.
  • The chipset features two efficiency cores clocked at 2.44 GHz, five cores at 2.86 GHz, and a prime core at 3.40 GHz.

  • Android Authority recently shared a detailed spec sheet for the Tensor G5 chipset, with an entirely different codename “laguna” and different core structure, with a 5-core cluster that matches the Geekbench entry.
  • This is most likely an early version of the Tensor G5, which could explain why its Geekbench scores are lower than those from the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s Geekbench test conducted by 91Mobiles.

  • The device also operates on Android 15, while the Pixel 10 series will feature Android 16 out of the box, as confirmed by Google’s own launch timeline, as the brand will roll out Android 16 by June 2025.
  • A recent leak also suggests the new Tensor G5 will be built on TSMC’s 3nm architecture rather than Samsung’s manufacturing processor.
  • Looking at all these leaks, its likely this new chipset is an Alpha version of the Tensor G5, therefore its best not to focus on the benchmark scores.
  • Android Authority also shares in its report that the new processor will use a new GPU from Imagination Technologies, the DXT-48-1536.
  • This new platform will offer Ray Tracing, a gaming feature adopted by top-of-the-line processors by all major manufacturers, and GPU virtualisation.
  • These new improvements will help give the Tensor G5 a much needed performance boost, but the report notes the Tensor G5’s GPU capabilities still lag by 2 generations and haven’t caught up with the top processors like the Apple A18 Pro and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite yet.
