Apple released iOS 18.3 beta to developers earlier this week and as part of this update, the company has temporarily disabled the Apple Intelligence-powered Notification Summary feature for news and entertainment apps. This comes after Apple was criticised for showing inaccurate summaries for notifications by various news outlets including BBC and The New York Times.

Apple Intelligence makes errors in summarising

For the unversed, Apple’s Notification Summary feature in November 2024 combined articles on three different topics published on The New York Times into a single notification, which indicated that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested. Similarly, it grouped several articles from BBC in a single notification to indicate that Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. The incident took place last month.

According to a report by 9to5mac, the company will enable this feature with a future update when it has ironed out all the issues with it.

How to disable Notification Summary feature on iPhone?

It is worth noting that iPhone users can also manually disable the Notification Summary feature till the time the company fixes issues with it. Here’s a step-by-step guide for the same:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll down and tap the ‘Notifications’ option.
Step 3: Tap the ‘Summarize Notifications’ option to turn the feature off.

iOS 18.3 beta features

In addition to disabling notification summaries for news and entertainment apps, the company is also rolling out a bunch of other customisation options to this feature. Here are the details:

• With iOS 18.3 beta, iPhone users will be able to disable notification summary for an app directly from the Lock Screen or the Notification Center.
• iOS 18.3 beta will show notification summaries in italics in order to differentiate it from regular app notifications.
• Apple will also warn users that notification summaries “may contain error”.
  
• The company will notify users that its Notification Summary feature, like all other Apple Intelligence features, is still available in the beta mode.
