Your Pixel 4a may be eligible for battery replacement, monetary compensation following a firmware update | Tech Tips
Google announced the Pixel 4a (review) in India back in August 2020. It was launched at a price tag of Rs 31,999. The phone is now more than four years old. The device remains on Android 13 OS since the software support officially ended in August 2023. Now the search giant is rolling out a new firmware update for improving the battery performance and stability. It does not bring any new features or Android 14 version to the Pixel 4a. Additionally, the company is also offering compensation if the update impacts the any Pixel 4a unit.
Pixel 4a to get firmware update starting this week
- Google is rolling out the Android 13-based firmware update for the Pixel 4a starting January 8.
- It includes new battery management features to improve the stability of battery performance.
- The company calls this Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program on its support page.
- The search giant cautions that some units may experience an opposite effect of the impending firmware update.
- It seems that Google knows that the new build may negatively impact the device with respect to its battery life, battery capacity, and charging speed.
- Another issue could be related to the battery indicator not showing the correct percentage.
- The search giant adds that users can continue using their Pixel 4a post update as long as they’re fine with the reduced battery performance.
Google offerings appeasements for impacted Pixel 4a units
- As per Google, not all Pixel 4a units will be impacted due to the upcoming firmware update.
- However, considering that the device is more than 3 years old, there is a solid chance that the battery capacity might have degraded if you have been a regular user.
- If the update does not make things worse, you won’t be eligible for an appeasement.
- The company is offering a free battery replacement for impacted Pixel 4a units. You can check if your phone is affected here.
- It is only available in India, US, UK, Canada, Germany, Singapore.
- Google is also offering other options which include $50 (~Rs 4,286) straight cash or $100 (~Rs 8,572) Google Store credit to be used towards a new Pixel.
- Owners have until January 8, 2026 to make their decision which is plenty of time.
It’s worth noting that Google will check for initial eligibility and physical inspection of the device to be eligible for the battery replacement. If the unit has suffered other forms of damage, then you may not qualify for the program. However, you still get to choose a different appeasement option, even if you’re no longer using the Pixel 4a.
