WhatsApp to soon end support for these iPhones | Tech Tips
WhatsApp has been working on several new features to enhance user experience. However, it is also planning to end support for older-generation iPhones. As per a report by WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned platform has been supporting older iOS versions to ensure that as many users as possible can enjoy new features. But now, the platform is considering dropping support for some older iPhones to focus on better technology and improved services. Here’s more about the development.
WhatsApp to end support for older iPhone models
- The report notes that starting May 5th, 2025, users with iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will no longer be able to use WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.
- As of now, the messaging platform supports iOS 12 and later, but future updates will require iOS 15.1 or newer for the app to function.
- The report notes that it won’t be possible even if users try to access WhatsApp through a previous beta version on TestFlight.
- WhatsApp is offering a five-month notice to give users time to update their devices if their hardware cannot support the latest iOS versions.
Which iPhone models will be affected?
- Notably, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users will be affected by this change, as the last iOS update available for these device models is iOS 12.5.7.
- It is worth noting that these iPhone models were launched over 10 years ago, so the number of users still running WhatsApp on these models might be minimal.
- Additionally, they have been discounted by the brand officially.
Here’s why WhatsApp is ending support for older iPhone models
As per the report, WhatsApp is making this change because newer iOS versions have updated APIs and technologies that the app needs to deliver new features. By discontinuing support for older iOS versions, WhatsApp can optimise its performance and add features that wouldn’t be possible on older systems.
