WhatsApp introduces new calling features on mobile and desktop | Tech Tips

Instant messaging platform, WhatsApp has announced new video calling features just in time for the holiday season. The company says that over 2 billion calls are made on WhatsApp every single day and to enhance the experience, new features are being introduced for mobile and desktop. These include the ability to select call participants, new effects for video calls and more. 

WhatsApp calling improvements

• Firstly, you can now select call participants when you are starting a call from a group chat. This will allow you to call exactly who you want to without disturbing others.
• Next, there are new effects for video calls to make the conversations fun. Users can choose between various effects, like adding a puppy ear, an underwater effect, a karaoke microphone and more.

• WhatsApp desktop application’s Calls tab has been improved. This is said to improve the calling experience from the desktop. On clicking the calls tab, you will be presented with all the required options to make a call, create a call link or dial a number directly. 
• The video call quality has been improved whether you are calling from a desktop or mobile. The calls are now claimed to be more reliable and offer higher-resolution video for both group and individual calls
• WhatsApp says that it will continue to bring improvements to calling to offer the “best quality experience from all over the world.”

This comes after WhatsApp recently rolled out a typing indicator similar to iMessage. This is introduced in a move to improve real-time communications in chats. This change will add a ‘…’ cue in the chat screen when someone starts typing in group or private chats. This will be present alongside the current ‘typing indicator’ that appears on top below the name of the chat/person.
