Spotify’s Gemini extension can now search and play hands-free audio but there are drawbacks | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • The extension is expected to be available for everybody in the coming days.
  • Spotify is the second third-party app to get Gemini’s capabilities.

Google is rolling out a Gemini extension for Spotify. It is the second third-party app after WhatsApp to get Gemini‘s AI capabilities. This will enable users to perform voice-controlled tasks like searching and playing audio with natural language commands. However, there are still a few drawbacks. Google’s support page for the extension has all the details including the initial setup process. Read on to know everything below.

Spotify gets Gemini extension

  • With the Gemini extension on Spotify, users can play music by album name, song name, or for a particular activity on the music streaming platform. It is also capable of playing a podcast.
  • Users can also search for songs by artist names, lyrics, or playlist names.
  • The Spotify account must be connected to the Google account.
  • This will allow users to enable the Gemini extension for Spotify by heading to the Gemini app’s Extension section.
  • At the moment, the extension’s capabilities are limited. It cannot create a Spotify playlist or play a radio channel.

Spotify Gemini extension drawbacks

The Spotify Gemini extension is only available for compatible Android devices with Gemini Assistant. Google’s support page for the extension reveals that users need to specify the music service in their prompt if multiple services like YouTube Music are connected. In this case, the Gemini app will pick up the last used music service unless users give a prompt like ‘Play [song name] on Spotify’. Another caveat is that the extension only supports Gemini’s English language currently. Furthermore, the streaming service can play the song if you have Spotify Premium.

The Spotify Gemini extension is currently rolling out and it may take some time to reach all compatible devices worldwide. iOS users are left out of the Gemini extension for Spotify. It is also not available in the Google Messages and the Gemini web app.
