Highlights
  • Samsung wants new products that expand its user’s options like the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.
  • Meanwhile, the Galaxy trifold phone components are ready for commercialisation.

Samsung is a leading player in the folding phone space and may be strategising to evoke more excitement for its foldable phones. One move in this direction could be launching a tri-fold phone. A new report claims Samsung is gearing up to launch a Galaxy tri-fold phone in 2025. Meanwhile, one area it doesn’t seem to be interested in is a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold. Here’s what’s going on in Samsung’s mind:

No cheaper Samsung Galaxy Z fold in the works?

Sammobile quotes a Samsung engineer to have said that it doesn’t have plans to release “a separate product (from the Z Fold lineup) with a lower price”.

Rather, it prefers products that “expand your (user’s) options” like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition. Such a product exists to satiate a user’s taste.

Is a Samsung Galaxy tri-fold phone in the plans, then?

So, one of those products that “expand” your options could be a Galaxy tri-fold phone. As per ZDNet Korea, Samsung Electronics (which includes the mobile division) aims to launch a tri-fold phone with a “screen that can be folded twice” next year.

The report states an industry insider claimed that component suppliers of Samsung Display (also part of Samsung Electronics) have developed parts for the trifold model and are “already ready for commercialization”.

But, of course, the final decision falls with Samsung Electronics’ MX (mobile) division.

Samsung has already patented a tri-fold smartphone and even released prototypes at CES 2022 (the device in this story’s cover image).

Meanwhile, Samsung Displays is facing lower sales demand for its OLED panels due to the uninspiring sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6. So, perhaps to bump up the demand, the company is looking for new product ideas. An industry insider expects “sales of existing and new models combined to fall by about 10% year-on-year.” Still, Samsung has projected shipments of over 10 million units next year from the actual expected shipments of 5 million units this year.
