Samsung tablet with extended display could be in the works, new patent suggests | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • With an extended display, Samsung could fit more screen area in a compact size.
  • One of the images shows the bottom portion of the tablet will have a USB Type-C port for charging.

After the recent patent finding for the new foldable gaming handheld, Samsung seems to be trying to further innovate the tablet segment with an extendable display. 91mobiles has exclusively spotted the patent application for the same being filed at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). Previously Samsung filed a patent for a laptop with extendable//foldable display.

  • Samsung Display Co. division filed for the patent application and the same was registered on November 26th, 2024.
  • From the exterior, the Samsung tablet appears like any other with a large rectangular display on the front. But is quite thick compared to recent tablets on the market.
  • What sets this apart is that the screen/display extends further from both the left and right sides, offering a large viewing area.
  • The tablet’s screen could be completely expanded automatically during certain tasks and it might go back to normal when there’s no need for the extra display area.

  • For the screen to be extended, there could be a motor present under the screen.
  • The dimensions of the Samsung tablet in its unextended and extended forms are not very clear from the patent application or the attached images.
  • The schematics from the patent show the tablet from various angles, including the ones that show the display being extended from right and left.
  • One of the images shows the bottom portion of the tablet will have a USB Type-C port for charging.

Like any other patent, it isn’t clear whether Samsung will ever launch a tablet with an extendable display. Samsung in the past has introduced the Rollable Flex screen meant for smartphones, tablets and others.

Besides the extendable tablet, back in September, reports surfaced that Samsung could be the first to launch a rollable smartphone with a large 12.4-inch when completely extended. It is said to come with an under-display camera on the front. Motorola showcased its rollable tech on a smartphone last year. It’s possible the rollable/expanding displays might soon become a reality and could be commercially available.
