  • The Snapdragon 8 Elite is the new flagship mobile chipset.
  • The first Snapdragon 8 Elite phones will launch in the coming week.

Qualcomm has finally taken the wraps off its flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. It was first expected to be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 as we’ve seen with previous generations but Qualcomm has opted for a name change this time with ‘Elite’. The Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC is powered by Qualcomm’s next-gen custom Oryon CPU, currently used in the Snapdragon X Elite chipset for laptops.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset announced

The Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset is built on TSMC’s 3nm process. The Oryon CPU architecture has the prime core at 4.32 GHz and performance cores at 3.53 GHz. Qualcomm says that this is the fastest mobile SoC with peak CPU speeds at 4.32 GHz. This is higher than the recently launched MediaTek Dimensity 9400, which has a maximum clock speed of 3.63 GHz.

Qualcomm says that the new chipset offers a 44 percent boost in CPU performance, 44 percent improved power efficiency, and 27 percent overall power savings. AI performance in the Snapdragon 8 Elite has also been boosted thanks to the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, which is now 45 percent faster. The chipset also has 40 percent Adreno GPU performance along with mobile-first support for Unreal Engine 5.3, which should help produce film-quality 3D environments.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is equipped with AI-powered camera features like ‘Limitless Segmentation’, which is said to recognise and enhance faces, hair, clothing, and more. It also allows the removal of unwanted elements from video footage.
