OPPO Find X8 series reportedly gets ‘Powered Off Finding’, here’s how it works | Tech Tips
OPPO Find X8 and Find X8 Pro phones launched in India back in November with MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset. The phones have now reportedly gotten support for the new ‘Powered Off Finding’ feature. As the name suggests, this makes it easy to find lost handsets even when turned off. Here’s everything about the new feature.
OPPO Find X8 series Powered Off Finding feature
- Google’s new Find My Device Network feature is reportedly available on the OPPO X8-series flagships with build versions CPH2659_15.0.0.401 (Find X8 Pro) and CPH2651_15.0.0.401 (Find X8).
- In the Power Menu, both phones are said to show the message “You can locate this phone with ‘Find My Device’ even when powered off.”
- Similarly, the ‘Find My Device’ menu in the settings reportedly mentions “Find My Device can also use the network to help locate this device when it’s powered off or out of battery.”
What is the Powered Off Finding feature?
Google launched the Powered Off Finding feature on the Pixel 8 series. This is aimed at enabling tracking of a phone even when it’s turned off when the battery depletes or is stolen. As for how it works, the feature is said to allow the device to store pre-computed Bluetooth beacons and transmit them even when the device is off, using “specialised Pixel hardware.”
The beacons are said to have encrypted location information, which is processed in the Find My Device Network and relayed to the device’s owner. For this to work, the feature relies on a certain battery management system or sort of reserve battery that is said to enable the Bluetooth and ultra-wideband chips to stay active even after the battery is completely dead.
This is claimed to help users locate their phones, even when the battery is completely drained. This feature is slowly expanding to more flagships, including the OPPO Find X8.
Prior to the introduction of this Powered Off Finding, the device tracking had limitations like when the phone is turned off, the Bluetooth transmitter stops receiving power. This prevented the phone from broadcasting the location to other devices nearby. Thereby making it harder to track the device.
