CES 2025 starts on January 7th and, as always, will be the stage for some exciting new tech. The HDMI Licensing Administrator will also unveil a new HDMI standard at the event, seven years after introducing HDMI 2.1 back in 2017. Here’s what we know so far:

New HDMI standard to be featured at CES 2025

The HDMI standard is a widely used cable and transmission standard for video and audio across TVs, gaming consoles, PCs, and more. The HDMI Forum will host a press event on January 6th in Las Vegas, a day before CES 2025 begins, to unveil a new HDMI standard, tentatively called HDMI 2.2. The update promises increased bandwidth, higher resolution support, and a new HDMI cable.

Yes, that’s right, HDMI 2.2 will require a new cable for it to function well, making it a significant update. That’s the extent of the reveal shared by the HDMI forum. The question is who will adopt the HDMI 2.2 standard? VideoCardz speculates the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5000 series and AMD Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs seem to be likely candidates, given their impending launches and scheduled conferences on January 6th. Although, there’s no official word on it yet.

The current HDMI 2.1 standard can transfer data at 48 Gbps, which supports resolutions like 8K and 10K at 30 FPS without needing Display Stream Compression (DSC). The new HDMI 2.2 standard could increase the transfer speed, making it possible to handle higher resolutions and frame rates without compression, offering even better picture quality for future devices.
