New Instagram test will change the way your profile grid looks | Tech Tips

Instagram has started testing a new layout that will completely change how your profile grid looks right now. It’s replacing the square grid with vertical rectangles similar to how Reels look on Instagram. The test has begun with select users but there’s no confirmation yet on whether the vertical profile layout will be officially rolled out.

Instagram testing vertical profile grids

  • Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted on his story about the new test, according to a report by The Verge. Mosseri announced that Instagram has started testing a vertical grid for profiles. So instead of squares your posts will now appear in vertical rectangles.
  • This would be a major change as Instagram has since its release maintained the square layout for profiles. It will also impact users who curate their feed according to the dimensions required.
  • Mosseri addresses this by saying, “I know this can be annoying for some of you who really spent a lot of time curating and making sure everything lines up, but I would really like to do better by the content today.”
  • He adds that most of the photos and videos uploaded to Instagram are vertical so to fit the square dimension, the photo or video has to be cropped.
  • It looks like the vertical feed will most likely come in the future as Mosseri’s story suggests the team will figure out a way to manage the transition.

Vertical profile grids on Instagram were first spotted in 2022 by tipster Alessandro Paluzzi on X. According to the tipster, it was tested publicly through 2023 and now the new layout must be available to more users.

Instagram has yet to officially confirm when it will roll out the vertical profile grid to all users. Seeing how this will be a major change for users everywhere, the transition will possibly take time.
