Reports regarding the iPhone 17 Air have been circling the web in the recent times. It is expected to replace the Plus model from the recent generation iPhone lineup. Per previous leaks, the device is rumoured to be thinner than the iPhone 6. Now, the iPhone 17 Air has reportedly started its journey to mass production according to sources familiar with supply chain. The smartphone’s pricing has also been tipped. Meanwhile, another report reveals Apple’s plans of foldable devices that include a foldable iPhone and another large-sized offering.

iPhone 17 Air may be cheaper than Pro models, production begins

  • As per The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone 17 Air will be cheaper than the Pro models and offer an alternative to those looking for a sleeker phone.
  • The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 and the iPhone 17 Air could carry the same $900 price point as the iPhone 16 Plus.
  • Digitimes reports that the iPhone 17 Air has entered the new production introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn factory.
  • This means that it is on the track of moving towards mass production.
  • During NPI phase, Apple and its suppliers work together to assess the viability of designs and the manufacturing process.
  • There are various stages in the NPI phase including design validation, prototype testing, supplier qualification, and manufacturing process development.
  • The iPhone 17 Air will eventually transition from concept to mass production.
  • A previous leak revealed one speaker, e-SIM reliance, 48MP single camera, and in-house 5G modem to maintain the iPhone 17 Air’s slimness.
  • The latest report adds that there could still be some design changes during the NPI stage to align with the manufacturing capabilities.

The iPhone 17 Air’s journey to mass production is still far away but things seem to be moving the right direction.

Apple’s plans for foldable devices

WSJ also reports that Apple could launch a foldable iPhone in 2026. However, it could also be delayed due to any unresolved technical challenges such as the hinge mechanism. The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a display that is larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max when opened. The Cupertino-based tech giant is also working on another large-sized foldable device that is boldly touted to be a laptop replacement featuring a 19-inch screen when unfolded. Both devices are said to be in development for years. WSJ adds that Apple is favouring inward-facing foldable display which is similar to other foldables in the market.
