Intel Core Ultra 200S series desktop processors launched, available October 24, 2024 onwards | Tech Tips
Intel has launched its first new AI-centric desktop processor. Called the Intel Core Ultra 200S, the new processor series (codenamed ‘Arrow Lake‘) will feature the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 285K as its flagship offering. While the Intel Core Ultra series isn’t exactly new, this is the first time that they will be available for the desktop as they have, till now, been limited to laptops.
The new Core Ultra 200S series will include five unlocked desktop processors with up to eight Performance Cores (P-Cores) and up to 16 Efficient Cores (E-Cores). The brand notes that the new processor will result in up to 14% more performance in multi-threaded workloads as compared to the previous generation. The processor will also offer an integrated Intel Xe GPU. As an AI PC, the new processors feature a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that aids with AI workloads. In fact, the brand claims that the processors can offer up to 36 platform TOPS of performance.
Improvements
The new Intel Core Ultra 200S desktop processors are said to offer an impressive increase in efficiency. The brand claims that the processors will offer up to 50* lower package power in everyday applications and up to 165W lower system power while gaming. Further, users can expect up to 6% faster single-threaded and up to 14% faster multi-threaded performance over the previous generation.
As mentioned earlier, the new processors will also feature an NPU alongside the CPU and GPU. Intel notes that this helps the Cores Ultra 200S processors offer up to 50% faster performance in AI-enabled creator applications against competing flagships by offloading AI functions. This could help significantly reduce power usage in AI workloads. Other use cases could include freeing up workloads on discrete GPUs, which in turn would help improve overall gaming performance. Speaking of gaming, the new processors can offer up to 28% gaming performance improvement as compared to competing processors.
Features
According to Intel, the Intel Core Ultra 200S series processors will offer a number of additional features. These include the new Intel 800 Series Chipset that will extend platform compatibility with up to 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, up to eight SATA 3.0 ports and up to 10 USB 3.2 ports. Speaking of which, the processors are now equipped with 20 CPU PCIe 5.0 lanes, four CPU PCIe 4.0 lanes, and support for two integrated Thunderbolt 4 connections. In terms of wireless connectivity, the processor supports Bluetooth v5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E, with support for Intel Killer Wi-Fi for improved online gaming performance.
Further, the processors will also offer new overclocking functionality with fine-grain controls. The top turbo frequency is controlled in 16.6MHz increments for both P-Cores and E-Cores. There is also a new memory controller that supports XMP and CUDIMM DDR5 memory up to 48GB per DIMM for up to 192GB of total memory. Finally, the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility now includes one-click overclocking enhancements.
In terms of security, the processor features the Intel Silicon Security Engine that promises to preserve data confidentiality and code integrity while maintaining performance.0
