Huawei’s patent for a new foldable smartphone design has been published in CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). • According to the patent, Huawei is working on a foldable smartphone with a rotating mechanism. It’s difficult to determine the exact design of this device but it looks like a foldable phone with a protective case on one side.
  • The foldable phone appears to have a rotating mechanism on both ends for the display to unfold into a larger device.
  • When folded, it looks like a tri-folding smartphone but the third layer seems to be the protective case for one of the displays.
  • It also looks like the Huawei foldable phone opens up to a rectangular-shaped form factor although it looks like a regular book-style folding design in some figures.
  • It’s not clear how exactly this design would work but a built-in protective case would be helpful for the foldable phone’s display.

As with every patent, this one too gives us a sneak peek at what Huawei is working on for its future device lineup. It doesn’t confirm a commercial launch for the foldable device or if Huawei will go through with developing it. But for Huawei to come with a unique design like this won’t be surprising as the brand is currently in the lead for foldable smartphones.
