Android 16 beta builds rollout dates may have been revealed | Tech Tips
Android 16 first developer preview rolled out in November followed by DP2 in December. This is much ahead of the usual timeline and comes as a part of the tech giant’s early release timeline to drive “faster innovation in apps and devices.” Now, a Google employee may have revealed the Android 16 beta builds rollout dates.
Android 16 beta rollout
- Going into details, Google officially confirmed the Android 16 beta first beta build will be rolled out this month i.e. January, followed by second and third builds in February and March, respectively.
- While the exact dates are under wraps at the moment, folks at Android Authority have spotted a comment by a Google employee on the Android Gerrit, which mentions the Android 16 beta 3 will roll out on March 12th.
- There’s no mention of beta 1 and beta 2 rollout dates but the comment from the Googler includes January 22nd and February 19th dates.
- While not explicitly confirmed, these could be when the first and second Android 16 beta builds will be out.
- Beta 3 in March is when Android 16 might reach the stability stage, which could be followed by a couple of other beta builds in April and May.
- Post this, the stable build will be released to AOSP and Pixel devices in Q2 2025.
Android 16 features (expected)
Android 16 is expected to bring several new changes and improvements over the current version.
- There will be improvements to the Photo Picker feature, which will allow users to grant access to only select media instead of the complete library. This is said to work in both cloud and local storage. This could also aid in better security/privacy.
- The Health Connect app will gain the ability to read and write medical data in FIHR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) format. However, for this to work, users will have to grant their consent.
- Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR), which was introduced in Android 15 and enables the display refresh rate to adapt to the content frame rate using discrete VSync steps to reduce consumption, will be further improved with new APIs that will make it easier for app developers to take complete advantage of the feature.
- Android 16 will also gain support for improved security features in Wi-Fi locations on supported devices with Wi-Fi 6’s 802.11az.
- The latest version of Privacy Sandbox on Android 16 further strengthens the privacy features and protects user data.
There could be more features in the pipeline and we should know complete details/changelog in the days to come.
