Air India in-flight Wi-Fi announced for domestic flights: how it works | Tech Tips
One of the biggest inconveniences with flights is you can’t access mobile data as you are supposed to enable aeroplane/flight mode by law. Well, Wi-Fi works in airplane mode and so, with the newly launched Air India in-flight Wi-Fi service, you can stay connected to the internet while in flight. This is possible thanks to the Indian government allowing internet services through Wi-Fi in aircraft. Let’s see how the service works, and which flights support the facility.
Air India Wi-Fi service: eligible flights, other details
- As per the Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024, which were recently amended by the government of India, Wi-Fi is allowed in-flight once they reach a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters. The Wi-Fi will be accessible via electronic devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets, etc.
- Air India Wi-Fi service is available currently on domestic flights including Airbus A350, select Airbus A321 Neo flights and Boeing 787-9. The company has said that it will progressively expand the service to other aircraft in its fleet over time.
- The service is available from January 1st, 2025.
- The service will be complimentary for an introductory period. We assume later it could be a premium service.
- People will be able to connect multiple devices to the in-flight Wi-Fi.
- The plane must be at a height of over 10,000 feet for this service to work.
- Air India conducted a pilot program for in-flight Wi-Fi that included international flights to destinations like New York, London, Singapore, and Paris.
