Instagram announces 3-minute-long reels, new Edits app and more | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • Earlier, the limit for Instagram reels was 90 seconds.
  • The new Instagram Edits app is available for preorder on Apple’s App Store.
  • Instagram will soon let users reorder their grid and share posts directly to it.

Instagram is getting a major upgrade, which includes features such as three-minute-long reels, updated profile grids and a dedicated friends feed within the ‘Reels’ tab. In addition to this, Instagram has introduced a new app for editing videos.

These features were announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri via several posts on the platform.

Instagram gets three-minute-long Reels

As of now, Instagram users can upload up to 90-second-long reels on the platform. Now, this limit has been increased to three minutes.

To recall, Instagram first introduced reels back in August 2020 in a bid to compete with TikTok. At the time, Reels were just 15-seconds long. Over time, the company increased the limit to 90 seconds, which has been revised once again.

New Instagram Edits app for iOS

  • Mosseri also announced a new Edits app that is aimed at making it easier for users to edit videos on their smartphones.
  • Besides editing features, creators will get access to tabs dedicated for inspiration and tracking early ideas and a higher camera quality.
  • Instagram’s new Edits app will also share insights into the performance of the videos created and shared using this app with the creators.
  • As far as availability is concerned, Mosseri said that the app can be preordered on iPhones via the App Store and that it will be available on Android soon.
  • “The app won’t be available to download until next month, and in the meantime, we’re going to work with a handful of video creators to get their feedback and improve the experience,” he wrote in his post.

More features coming to Instagram

In a separate post on Instagram, Mosseri said that the company was bringing a new feature to Reels that will enable users to access a dedicated feed wherein they will be able to see all the reels liked by their friends.

This dedicated feed in Reels will also let users add a note to a reel liked by their friend and even start a conversation with them. However, this new feature will be available in select countries in the beginning. Mosseri didn’t share the list of supported countries in his post.

In addition to these features, Instagram has introduced a tall grid on profile. It is also building a tool to let users reorder their entire grid and share posts directly to their grids.

We started with the tall grid because most photos and videos that are uploaded to Instagram at this point are vertical and rectangles do a better job showing off those photos and videos

Lastly, Instagram is planning to move highlights into the grid and add them as a tab.
