  • The ‘veg-mode enablement fee’ was noticed via a viral LinkedIn post.

Zomato CEO apologises for ‘veg-mode enablement fee’

  • In his post, Bengaluru-based Rohit Rajan criticised Zomato for charging a ‘luxury tax’ on ordering vegetarian food.
  • “Zomato’s latest masterstroke – introducing an “extra charge” for the veg enablement fleet – has officially turned us into a premium subscription plan,” he wrote in a post on the platform adding that ‘being veg is now a luxury tax’.
  • His post was spotted by Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal who seemed unaware of the extra fee and called it ‘stupid’, promising to get it removed immediately.
  • “This is absolutely stupid on our part. I am super sorry for this. This charge will be removed today itself,” Goyal wrote in a comment on Ranjan’s post.
  • Goyal’s response was lauded by the netizens who praised the founder for his prompt response.

Zomato introduces ‘pure-veg fleet’ and ‘pure-veg mode’

  • To recall, Zomato had first introduced pure-veg fleet and pure-veg mode with its app in India last year in March for customers who follow a strictly vegetarian diet.
  • The feature included green-coloured delivery boxes along with food deliveries from ‘pure-veg restaurants’ only among other things.
  • However, the feature stirred a massive controversy, which led to the company removing some of the features offered as a part of its ‘pure-veg fleet’.
  • A day after the roll out of the feature, Goyal shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) wherein he clarified that while the company would still continue to have a dedicated fleet for vegetarian food deliveries while removing on-ground segregation for the fleet using the colour green.
  • “This means that the fleet meant for vegetarian orders will not be identifiable on the ground (but will show on the app that your veg orders will be served by the veg only fleet,” he had written in his post.

It is worth noting that while Zomato had introduced a dedicated mode and fleet for vegetarian food, the company hadn’t levied any additional fee on such orders at the time.
