OnePlus 13’s first software update brings on-device Gemini Nano | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • Gemini Nano requires Android AICore app to download the AI model.
  • The app becomes available after installing the latest update on the OnePlus 13.

Yesterday, OnePlus 13R received its first incremental update improving certain things. Now, the latest number series flagship i.e. the OnePlus 13 is also getting its first software update. Along with bringing the same changes that are found on the mid-range offering, the update for the flagship model is considered to be a major one. This is because, it brings support for Gemini Nano which is the smallest version of Google’s large language model (LLM). If you’re unaware, the OnePlus 13 shipped with certain AI features like intelligent search, circle to search, magic compose etc.

OnePlus 13 gets Gemini Nano with its first update

  • The OnePlus 13 (performance review) has picked up its first OxygenOS 15 update with the build number CPH2655_15.0.0.402(EX01)
  • It weighs 1GB in size and you can check it by heading to Settings > System and updates > Software update > Download and Install.
  • As per Mishaal Rahaman (via Android Authority), the striking highlight of the update is that it brings support for on-device Gemini Nano on the OnePlus 13.
  • This LLM model from Google requires Android AICore app and Rahaman notes that after installing the update, it appeared in the Google Play Store as available for updates.
  • After updating the app, the OnePlus 13 started downloading Gemini Nano model after opening the Google Messages app and tapping the Magic Compose feature.
  • The presence of Gemini Nano on the phone is further confirmed by the preview message that appears in the Magic Compose window.

  • Hence, if you have the smartphone, you’re recommended to take the same route to access Gemini Nano.
  • Rahaman adds that the AICore app on his OnePlus 13 unit takes 3.8GB space compared to 1.3GB on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. This points towards the latest multimodal version of the Gemini Nano.

Most AI features require access to internet. Despite being the smallest LLM, Gemini Nano powers various features like summarisation, smart replies, and more. Currently, the AI model on supported non-Pixel devices only uses Gemini Nano for magic compose in Google Messages. This is expected to change in the near future.

Apart from the support for Gemini Nano, the update brings features that were introduced on the OnePlus 13R. It improves the clarity of previews, photos, and videos shot in 4K 60fps mode. Audio quality is also improved. There’s now an ability to add 1×2 weather widgets on the home screen. The OnePlus 13 launched in India this month at a starting price tag of Rs 69,999
