OnePlus 13 and 13R are first in India to feature Jio’s 5.5G network: here’s what it means | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • The 5.5G network is claimed to offer enhanced speed, lower latency, and better network stability.
  • OnePlus promises to offer a 380 percent faster speed with the network.
  • The company claims to have tested the network for stability in underground car parks, elevators and crowded cricket matches.

OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R are the new flagship phones from the brand in India. These come as successors to the OnePlus 12 and 12R from last year and bring some notable upgrades to the design and hardware. One among them is the new 5.5G network that was introduced in collaboration with leading telecom network Jio. This is exclusive to India and is claimed to offer an enhanced network experience. OnePlus 13 series with 5.5G network

  • OnePlus 13 and 13R are the first phones in India to feature the Jio 5.5G network (also referred to as 5G-Advanced). It builds on the 5G network.
  • The company notes that with 5.5G network support, the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R can connect to three different network cells, even on different towers at the same time for faster connectivity. OnePlus promises an average speed enhancement of 380 percent.
Speed-test
  • The company even demonstrated the speed comparison during the launch. This showed a downlink speed of 277.8 Mbps on the Non-3CC (Component Carrier) Jio network compared to up to 1,023.24 Mbps on the Jio 5G-Advanced (5.5G) 3CC.
  • To offer a more stable connection, OnePlus says that it tested the network by making calls from underground car parking and WhatsApp calls from elevators and crowded cricket matches. The results are said to be better than the competition.
  • The data presented by OnePlus shows that phone calls from underground are said to be 22 percent more stable on the OnePlus 13 series than “Pro Max” devices and 30 percent more stable than “flagship Ultra’ devices.

  • Furthermore, WhatsApp calls in elevators are said to be 20 percent more stable than on “Pro Max” and 47 percent more stable than on “flagship Ultra.” WhatsApp calls from crowded cricket matches are claimed to be 75 percent more stable on the new OnePlus flagships than “Pro Max” and 66 percent over “flagship Ultra.”

What is a 5.5G network?

The 5.5G network, as the name suggests will be a natural progression of 5G technology. It is said to offer enhanced speeds, expanded connectivity, lower latency, and integrated intelligence. The commencement of the commercial 5.5G (5G-Advanced) began with Release 18. This builds on Release 15,16, and 17 and is said to be the first phase of the ‘Advanced’ standard. This is expected to further evolve with Release 21, which is expected by 2028 as per Ericsson.

Operators have begun testing the 5.5G network globally and have announced successful trials with up to 10 Gbps speeds. In India, Bharti Airtel and Nokia signed a multi-year deal in November 2024 to deploy 4G and 5G equipment as a step towards 5G-Advanced.
