Apple MagSafe-like Qi2 magnetic wireless charging coming to Samsung Galaxy and more Android devices this year | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • iPhone 12 and older have always supported native Qi2 wireless charging based on MagSafe.
  • Qi2 offers faster, more efficient charging, and works with magnetic accessories for better alignment.

At the ongoing CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced that Qi2 is set to arrive on Android devices this year. This is after the wireless charging standard’s debut two years ago at CES 2023. In the same year, Apple was the first brand to start offering compatibility on the iPhone 12 and newer models. However, its competitor Android lagged behind with HMD Skyline being the only phone to support Qi2. Now, both Samsung and Google have confirmed that they will offer Qi2-compatible devices this year.

More Android phones to get Qi2 support, Qi2 Ready introduced

  • WPC says that Qi2’s adoption in Android devices will accelerate this year.
  • Samsung added that Galaxy devices in 2025 will support the wireless charging standard.
  • The exact names of Qi2-compatible phones remains unknown, but we can expect the Galaxy S25 series releasing later this month to be the first among many phones.
  • Google has also seemingly confirmed Qi2 support for its future Pixel flagships. As per the press release, the search giant is helping in developing the next version named Qi v2.2 standard.
  • The company’s statement also hints at the possibility of other Android phones getting support for the charging standard.
  • Apart from this, the Wireless Power Consortium has also announced a ‘Qi2 Ready‘ certification promising a full Qi2 experience.
  • This is for smartphones that can charge wirelessly with Qi2, but they need a special case with a magnetic ring to properly align with magnetic chargers.
  • Previously, it was rumoured that the Galaxy S25 series will support Qi2 through cases. However, it also remains to be seen if the tech will actually be built-in.

For those unaware, Qi2 technology includes adding a ring of magnets to the phone. It ensures efficient wireless charging and a proper alignment between a device and charging accessories.
