Apple has long been the leader in the smartwatch wearable segment with its premium offering, the Apple Watch. While the launch of the Apple Watch Series 10 helped the Californian brand get back to the top position in the third quarter of this year, an overall report of quarters one to three shows that a Chinese brand has dethroned Apple. Here are the details.
Huawei overtakes Apple to become the top smartwatch brand
A report by IDC has given us an insight into the world’s smartwatch shipments. Smartwatches are one of the most popular wearables, and Apple has been leading the segment for quite some time. However, Huawei seems to have beaten the US-based brand in Q1 to Q3 of 2024.
IDC reported that Huawei captured a market share of 16.9% in cumulative Q1-Q3 2024 by shipping 23.6 million smartwatches. Apple stood second with 22.5 million shipments and a 16.2% market share.
The Chinese smartwatch market saw year-on-year growth of 23.3%, while both the US and India declined. Some of the popular Huawei smartwatch models are the Watch GT5, GT5 Pro and the Watch D2 with blood pressure monitoring.
Huawei has also registered stable growth in APAC, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. While the Apple Watch is still the most popular smartwatch in the world, it faces competition in different price segments, which has led to a -12.8% growth rate. It is also interesting to note that Xiaomi, Samsung and the BBK group of brands saw around 25% YoY growth rate each.
