Google Pixel phones get battery charging limit and bypass charging features | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • Both the new features aid in reducing the wear of battery and extend its health.
  • The bypass charging is only activated once the Pixel phone hits 80 percent battery.

Google introduced the December Pixel Drop feature update earlier this month. It brings a host of new features including the ability to limit charging to 80 percent. This aims to extend the lifespan of the battery. The feature is becoming increasingly common on other Android phones like the OnePlus 13. It is also found on the latest iPhones. Addtionally, there is also another battery health saving feature in the update called ‘bypass’ charging. Read on to know all the details.

Google adds battery health saving features for Pixels

  • As the name suggest, the battery charging limit caps the battery capacity to 80 percent.
  • This helps to prolong the device’s battery lifespan by preventing it from fully charging.
  • The feature can be accessed on the latest Pixel software version by heading to Settings > Battery > Toggle the charging optimisation > Select limit to 80 percent.
  • This is not everything though. The feature also comes with support for bypass charging.
  • Google confirmed to Android Authority that the charging current flows into the battery until the supported Pixel phones hit 80 percent capacity.

  • However, this activates bypass charging that allows the Pixel phone to draw power directly from the charger.
  • This means that the device could run on the AC power instead of depending on the power supplied by battery which would result in its drainage.
  • The feature is said to only work if the 80 percent battery limit is enabled, achieved, and the device stays plugged in.
  • There’s also Adaptive Charging option under the charging optimisation section that disables the bypass charging feature.

Google is yet to reveal the list of phones that support bypass. As per the support page, the limit to 80 percent feature is available on Pixel 6a and later devices. Android Authority notes that any Pixel device that receives the December update with this feature should work with bypass charging.
