Indian domestic airlines can now provide in-flight WiFi to passengers as government amends rules | Tech Tips
In-flight WiFi services have gained popularity worldwide and are eventually becoming popular in India. However, it is still unavailable for passengers on domestic flights in India, but this might change soon. The government has come up with a new clarification regarding using in-flight Wi-Fi for Indian fliers.
The new guideline suggests that they will be able to use in-flight Wi-Fi services only when electronic devices are permitted. Notably, this guideline aims to ensure that in-flight connectivity operates under controlled and regulated conditions. Here are some more details of the in-flight WiFi services.
In-flight WiFi for fliers in India
Notably, the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules, first implemented in 2018, initially required that mobile communication services on aircraft could only be activated after the aircraft reached a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters, aimed to prevent any interference with mobile networks on the ground.
Meanwhile, the newly updated regulations specify that WiFi internet services will also be permitted once the aircraft has reached this altitude, as long as the crew authorises the use of electronic devices, including phones or tablets.

This also means that in-flight WiFi services might soon be available on all domestic flights in India, allowing fliers to use services such as WhatsApp, YouTube and more.
“Notwithstanding the minimum height in Indian airspace referred to in sub-rule (1), internet services through Wi-Fi in aircraft shall be made available when electronic devices are permitted to be used in the aircraft,” says the new rule.
Vistara offers WiFi on some long-distance domestic routes and select international flights, while airlines like IndiGo and other airlines in India might roll out in-flight connectivity in the future.
It is worth noting that the new regulations are designed to ensure that connectivity services are consistent with safety protocols for electronic device use on aircraft. Stay tuned for more updates.
