Huawei patent reveals foldable smartphone with built-in protective case | Tech Tips
Huawei’s patent for a new foldable smartphone design has been published in CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). The patent design shows a foldable smartphone with a protective case attached. It may appear as a tri-folding smartphone with a third layer in the device, which seems to be the protective case.
Huawei foldable smartphone patent with protective case
- According to the patent, Huawei is working on a foldable smartphone with a rotating mechanism. It’s difficult to determine the exact design of this device but it looks like a foldable phone with a protective case on one side.
- The foldable phone appears to have a rotating mechanism on both ends for the display to unfold into a larger device.
- When folded, it looks like a tri-folding smartphone but the third layer seems to be the protective case for one of the displays.
- It also looks like the Huawei foldable phone opens up to a rectangular-shaped form factor although it looks like a regular book-style folding design in some figures.
- It’s not clear how exactly this design would work but a built-in protective case would be helpful for the foldable phone’s display.

As with every patent, this one too gives us a sneak peek at what Huawei is working on for its future device lineup. It doesn’t confirm a commercial launch for the foldable device or if Huawei will go through with developing it. But for Huawei to come with a unique design like this won’t be surprising as the brand is currently in the lead for foldable smartphones.
Huawei is the first in the industry to commercially launch the first tri-folding smartphone. The Huawei Mate XT was launched in China in October and it has a tri-folding mechanism that opens up to a large 10.2-inch 3K OLED display. It’s currently available only in China with no word on a global expansion yet.
