Google for India 2024: Gemini Live now in Hindi, weather alerts on Google Maps, and more | Tech Tips

The Google for India 2024 event took place today where the company announced several new features and updates for Indian users. Gemini Live, its AI voice assistant was recently rolled out to Android users for free. Google has added Hindi support for Gemini Live along with more languages coming soon. Google Maps has also been updated with real-time weather alerts. More announcements include gold loans on Gpay, a new AI Skills House, and more.

Gemini Live in Hindi

You can now use the AI voice assistant Gemini Live in Hindi. You’ll have to first download the app from the Google Play Store. Google is adding support for eight more Indian languages in the coming weeks: Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Urdu. 

Weather alerts on Google Maps

You can now get real-time weather alerts on Google Maps. Users will be able to report weather conditions like fog and flooding due to heavy rains on Maps. The data collected will be based on the user reports. Google will also start showing quick summaries of restaurants, hotels, and other locations on Maps. 

Gold loans on Google Pay

Google is introducing gold-backed loans on Gpay in collaboration with Muthoot Finance. These loans are said to be available at affordable interest rates, offer flexibility, and provide security to the lender. Google is also partnering with Aditya Birla Finance Limited for personal loan offerings on Gpay. There’s also a Gemini-powered support guide for users to understand all about taking loans, the process, and how their repayment scheme will work out. 

Enhanced Fraud Protection in Google Play Protect

Google announced a new feature called ‘Enhanced Fraud Protection’ in India. It’s launching here first and it will be part of Google Play Protect. This feature is designed to prevent sideloading of apps on Android apps. It will detect and block app installations from third-party platforms that request sensitive permissions often abused in financial scams.

Google also announced the launch of its Safety Engineering Center in India set to open in 2025. It will focus on protecting users from threats like online scams and frauds, helping improve enterprise and government security. Google will also provide flagship AI courses to people in India with its ‘AI Skills House’. Those interested can take up courses in English and seven Indian languages for free and receive a completion badge.
