Android 16 codename leaks before Android 15 rollout to Pixel phones | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • Android 16 internal codename is reportedly Baklava.
  • Android 16 will be debuting next year at the I/O 2025 conference

Android 15 is yet to roll out to Pixel phones but it looks like Google started the work for its next OS, which is the version Android 16. The codename of the upcoming OS has been leaked. Google has a habit of using dessert names, like Android 14 is ‘Upside Down Cake’ and Android 15 is Vanilla Ice Cream Cake, and it looks to be following the same for Android 16 as well, which will have the codename ‘Baklava’.

Android 16 codename is Baklava

  • The company earlier stayed in line with the serial order of the English alphabet. For Android 14, it was internally called Upside Down cake and Android 15 is referred to as Vanilla Ice Cream. This means the subsequent release should start with ‘W’.
  • However, Google seems to be changing tracks by reportedly going with ‘Baklava’ for the Android 16 update, which is a popular dessert from the Middle East.
  • With Android 16 being in the works, the Mountain View giant sets the platform SDK version to the codename until the SDK is finalised.
Android-16
  • Inside an AOSP version of Android, the min_sdk_version field is set to ‘Baklava’.
  • To recall, the min_sdk_version field for Android 15 was set to VanillaIceCream. When the OS hit its first Platform Stability milestone, the Android version name was changed from “VanillaIceCream” to Android 15.
  • Interestingly enough, a Google Engineer accidentally leaked the Android 16 codename and there are checks to see if the build’s platform SDK matches ‘Balkava’.

Google’s OS development has seen a significant and fundamental change, with this being referred to as the ‘Trunk Stable’ project. This could be why Google may not have followed the traditional naming scheme. Android 14 and Android 15 QPR versions have builds that start with ‘A’, suggesting a new way of Android OS development and why the new naming structure has started.

Android 16 is rumoured to bring a redesigned Quick Settings and Notifications panel. The changes were found in the latest Android 15 QPR beta. The redesign covers just a quarter of the screen and not the entire screen like the current layout. Google has removed the Quick Settings panel from the notification area.
