iPhone 16 teardown video shows battery replacement is easier than before | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • iPhone 16 battery can be easily replaced by applying a low-voltage electrical current.
  • iPhone 16/iPhone 16 Plus scored a 7/10 rating in iFixit provisional reparability.

Apple’s latest iPhones are now on sale globally and include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The major advancement in the build is the new camera/capture button, at least from the outside. For internal changes, we have iFixit, who now tore apart the iPhone 16/16 Plus to show us what’s changed inside. The teardown video shows the internal design is mostly the same on both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

iPhone 16 teardown reveals complete design

Firstly iFixit says the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus has seen a huge internal redesign, with a new highly repairable battery and improved thermal management. The video shows that access to the phone’s internals can be gained from the back glass and the adhesive is claimed to be pretty strong. Using a pick tool to secure an entry point, folks at iFixit make their way around through the entire backglass with a few more picks.

Once the back glass panel is removed by disconnecting the logic board connecting cables, you are greeted with a large-capacity battery and the rest of the internal structure. iFixit demonstrates just how easy removing the battery is by applying a low-voltage electrical current through alligator clips connected to power and the battery gets released from the chassis cleanly without causing any mess.

iPhone 16 battery removal

Previous generation iPhone models held the battery in place through glue and you had to stretch the four pull tabs to remove the battery. This process can get tedious as the pull tabs sometimes fail. If the battery is damaged during the process, there’s always a risk of fire. The new iPhone 16 battery management eliminates this. The new adhesive holding the battery, which could be supplied by ‘Tesa’, is a layered structure with epoxy laced with an electrically conductive liquid.

Even after removing the battery unit, the adhesive will remain on the frame. iFixit further proceeds to disconnect the display of the phone by using a pick tool and then by disassembling the entire components, starting with the haptic engine through the logic board.

We now shift our focus to the much-talked camera button, which is now placed in place of the mmWave antenna. The cable assembly underneath the camera button has a new component, which on zooming in revealed to be a tiny pressure sensor, which as per iFixit should be able to detect whether you are fully pressing it to take a picture or half-pressing.

The camera button remains in the case and can only be removed by breaking the weld points. This button houses its own new IC (integrated circuit). iFixit says that for the first time since the iPhone 5, the majority of the parts inside the iPhone 16 can be replaced with other OEM parts, with few exceptions like the Apple ID technology. Overall, the iPhone 16/iPhone 16 Plus scored a 7/10 rating in iFixit provisional reparability.
