Apple iPhone 16 models are easier to repair thanks to these changes | Tech Tips
Apple has been focused on making its iPhones easier to repair, and the new iPhone 16 series shows substantial improvements in this area. This is a welcome change for those considering the latest models. Let’s look at what improvements the new series brings to the table.
Apple iPhone 16 series offers some good reparability upgrades
Apple has shared with engadget and Tom’s Guide how its new iPhone 16 series phones are more reparable than ever, and here’s how:
- Battery upgrades: The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus now have batteries that are easier to replace, thanks to a new “ionic liquid battery adhesive.” This adhesive can be loosened with a low-voltage current, like from a 9V battery, which is much easier compared to the older, tougher adhesive strips.
- Repair Assistant: With iOS 18, Apple introduced the Repair Assistant. This tool lets users and third-party repair specialists set up both new and used Apple parts directly on the device without needing to call Apple for help. This makes fixing certain components even easier.
- New repair modules: The TrueDepth camera can now be set up directly on the iPhone 12 and newer models, no MacBook needed. Apple can also service the LiDAR scanner on iPhone Pro models, along with the rear camera module.
- Diagnostics tool: iOS 18 comes with a new tool called Apple Diagnostics for Repair. It helps you figure out what’s wrong with your device and which parts need replacing without having to use another device for diagnosis.
- Third-party repairs: Apple is expanding support for third-party and used Apple parts. Used parts can now be calibrated through Apple’s cloud-based servers and will be marked as “used” in the repair history. While third-party parts still can’t be fully calibrated, your iPhone 16 will try to activate them so they work as well as possible.
