After Huawei, Xiaomi could launch its own tri-fold smartphone, new patent suggests | Tech Tips

Huawei’s breakthrough in foldable devices is making a lot of noise thanks to its innovative approach of opting for three hinges. The Huawei Mate XT is the first tri-fold device to be available in the market, and Xiaomi could launch a similar form-factor. 91mobiles has discovered a patent filing that shows a possible design of Xiaomi’s tri-fold smartphone.

Xiaomi tri-fold smartphone patent details

Xiaomi’s new application at China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) has revealed the design of what could be an upcoming tri-fold smartphone. The document attached with the application is dated 3rd September. The renders suggest that Xiaomi is going for a similar approach to the Huawei Mate XT, where the foldable can be used in three different screen sizes.

The Xiaomi tri-fold phone could also have a horizontal camera bar at the top of the back panel with three sensors. Rumours popped up last month from a somewhat reliable source based on Weibo (a Chinese social media site) about Xiaomi developing such a device, so the idea is certainly not far-fetched.

However, at this time, we cannot say whether this Xiaomi tri-fold design will be a consumer device or remain a concept. Xiaomi is known to launch some innovative options under its “MIX” range of smartphones in China. If this tri-fold does hit the market, it could be released under the MIX series.

It would be worth looking forward to whether this device will make its way to the global market with Android, something Huawei misses out on due to sanctions against the brand.
For now, Xiaomi is expected to launch the latest Xiaomi 14T series globally on September 26th.
