Apple Intelligence to launch with iOS 18.1 but only these features will be available first | Tech Tips

Highlights
  • Apple Intelligence will be available with the iOS 18.1 update next month.
  • At launch only some features like writing tools and the new Siri will be available.
  • Apple said the remaining features like Image Playground and Image Wand will be available in the coming months.

Apple announced more details about its on-device AI features at the iPhone 16 launch event. Apple Intelligence was first unveiled at WWDC in June and confirmed to launch later this year with iOS 18. The wait will be a little longer as Apple Intelligence will be available with iOS 18.1 and not all features arrive on launch day. iOS 18 is rolling out on September 16 for all compatible devices.

These Apple Intelligence features won’t be available at launch

Apple Intelligence brings a host of on-device AI features to iPhones including an upgraded Siri. However, most of the important features will be available only later this year. These include ‘Image Playground’ which lets you create images using text prompts, ‘Image Wand’ which turns your sketches into images, and ‘Genmoji’ which creates custom emojis, ChatGPT integration, and a more capable Siri.

Apple Intelligence features available at launch

Apple Intelligence will be available with the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 software updates next month. The first batch of features includes AI writing tools like proofreading, rewriting, and summarising, creating movies from your ‘Memories’ based on text prompts, ‘Clean Up’ tool to remove objects from photos, and native call recording. You also get the new Siri, which is now more natural and deeply integrated, and also has a new look with a glowing light around the edges of the phone.

Apple Intelligence: list of compatible devices

Apple Intelligence sure sounds fun but it’s very limited when it comes to devices that are getting the AI features. The new iPhone 16 series is getting Apple Intelligence but among older devices, only those with the A17 Pro chip, and M1 to M4 SoCs are compatible. This includes the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPads running the M1 chip or later, and Macs powered by the M1 chip or later.

Apple Intelligence will be available first in US English followed by localised English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK in December. It will add support for more languages including Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish, next year.
