Google Photos is getting a new feature that will make it easier for users to search for photos and videos. The new search feature in Google Photos will also produce relevant results. Google is also rolling out early access for Ask Photos to select users in the US. This feature is powered by Gemini for a conversational search experience in Google Photos.
Google Photos new search feature
- Google is making it easier to search for specific photos and videos using everyday language.
- Some examples of this search include using keywords like “Alice and me laughing,” “Kayaking on a lake surrounded by mountains” or “Emma painting in the backyard.” So you can explain the photo or video in a natural and descriptive instead of using just keywords.
- You can even sort your search results by date or relevance so that it’s faster for you to get the exact photo or video. Once you’ve typed your query, Google Photos will show you results that best match what you asked for.
- The new Google Photos feature is rolling out to all users on Android and iOS. It’s currently available in English and will expand to more languages over the coming weeks.
Gemini-powered Ask Photos rolling out in the US
Google is also rolling out early access of its Gemini-powered ‘Ask Photos’ feature to select users in the US. It essentially uses AI to understand your photo gallery better and help provide the best search results. Ask Photos provides a conversational search experience so you can ask questions like “Where did we camp last time we went to Yosemite?” or “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanley?”

Ask Photos will answer your questions based on the details of your photo gallery. You can continue providing more clues so it’s easier for Ask Photos to find the correct photo or video. You can even use this feature to get suggestions for the best photos from a recent event or summarise your recent activities so you can share them with a friend.
