Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 tri-fold concept phone with 10-inch display unveiled | Tech Tips

Tecno has officially teased the Phantom Ultimate 2, its ultra-thin tri-fold concept smartphone. The Phantom Ultimate 2 is claimed to be the thinnest among existing tri-folding models, measuring just 11mm in thickness. Besides Tecno, Xiaomi and Huawei are also actively working on tri-folding phones.

Tecno shows off a new tri-fold foldable phone

• The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 when unfolded has a large 10-inch screen with TDDI technology, which is apparently being used for the first time in a foldable device.
• The company says the new tri-folding phone addresses key pain points of the foldables like the hinge durability, camera performance and software optimisation.
• When completely folded, the Phantom Ultimate 2 becomes a regular candy bar-style phone. When unfolded, it transitions into a tablet-like large-screen device.
• Despite the large screen size, the company was able to keep its thickness to just 11mm when folded, courtesy of a new thinner hinge. 

• This is quite a feat considering the brand was able to keep the thickness similar to current bi-folding phones like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold which measures 10.5mm and slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which is 12.1mm in thickness when folded.
• The device features the industry’s thinnest battery cover measuring at just 0.25mm. This is thanks to the super-compressed Titan Advanced Fiber material.
• Tecno says this advanced material brings sufficient strength while also allowing a thinner form.

The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 when folded has a 6.48-inch size and this unfolds into a large 10-inch 4:3 ratio large tablet-like device. It has an OLED Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) and an advanced 3K LTPO screen with 392 PPI.

Tecno claims the hinge design boasts a strength of 2100MPa and can support over 300,000 folds, exceeding most folding devices. The hinges also contribute to minimizing the crease visibility for a more immersive viewing experience.

The tri-folding phone also supports screen hovering for various scenarios like typing on a keyboard while the upright screen provides a laptop-style display. It also has a tent mode for dual-screen face-to-face real-time AI translation.

Tecno says the software and UI are optimised for the tri-fold design and offer dynamic wallpapers, adaptive icons that adjust with folding and unfolding and more. The UI layout is adapted for diverse use cases such as large-screen viewing and tent mode. 

Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 is not the first innovative concept from the brand. Previously, the Phantom Ultimate offered a rolling-screen concept smartphone.
