Xiaomi trifold phone reportedly in the works: what to expect | Tech Tips

The foldable phones of today could soon make way for triple-folding phones! After the recent Huawei trifold phone report, we are now hearing Xiaomi could also be pursuing a triple foldable design. While that’s intriguing, we wonder what this format could mean for you and me, the user. Let’s read what we know about the Xiaomi trifold phone and other works in this direction.

Xiaomi trifold phone (rumour)

As per Weibo tipster Smart Pikachu (via GizmoChina), Xiaomi trifold is in the advanced stages of development. The tipster hasn’t shared any evidence to back his claim though.

If it is indeed in development, we expect to see its launch at an attention-grabbing event like the Mobile World Congress (MWC). But, whether the device will be ready for MWC 2025 or similar events is something only time will tell. 

We reckon a neoteric Xiaomi phone like this could ship with the latest hardware (chip, display), HyperOS software, and Leica camera setup. It may launch under Xiaomi’s MIX brand.

It won’t be just Xiaomi with such a device. As mentioned in the intro, Huawei, TCL, and Samsung are all in some stage of product development. 

Huawei CEO was spotted with this Z-shaped device. The company has announced a September launch frame for it. TCL has already showcased its trifold smartphone at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2024 show. Samsung, meanwhile has got approval for the patent.

Possible use cases of a trifold phone design

• The more screen real estate means more surface area for opening multiple apps and multi-tasking. 
• The larger surface area could be useful for media consumption and perhaps a canvas for artistic works.
• Perhaps, developers could launch desktop versions of their apps on these devices since they have the screen size to accommodate those app UIs.
• The big screens may allow presentations, document noting, and editing work at an office or business. 
• All of these while the device may be portable because of the triple folds and the general advancements in the folding display, hinge, and internal component design.
