WhatsApp starts testing AR call effects and filters for iPhones: here’s how it works | Tech Tips

WhatsApp has started testing a new feature for iPhones. This new feature lets users add AR call effects and filters. It was first tested on the WhatsApp beta version for Android and now the feature has arrived on iOS. Do note that this feature is in beta so not everyone will be able to experience it. Only those users who have opted in for the WhatsApp beta programme will be able to try out the new feature.

  • The new AR feature was spotted by WABetaInfo in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.17.10.74 update.
  • It essentially lets you add filters and backgrounds to your WhatsApp video calls. You have the option to add different coloured filters and backgrounds of different scenes like those in Google Meet.
  • You can even blur your background or choose one of the pre-set options offered by WhatsApp. This feature will appear whenever you get on a video call on WhatsApp.
  • There’s also a low-light mode that brightens up your video if you’re in a low-light environment. You can also use the touch-up mode that smoothens out your skin.
  • You can choose any of these filters or backgrounds or simply not use them during video calls.

WABetaInfo adds that WhatsApp will remember the previous setting of the video call. So whichever filter or background you’ve chosen in the last video call will be automatically applied in a new call. Since this feature is currently in beta, it’s available only to limited users. Even Android users can try it out if they’re on the beta version of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp regularly tests new features on its beta version. If the feature has made it to public beta then it’s highly possible that WhatsApp will roll it out officially to all users.
